replace sofa cushions

Every day people get rid of their old sofas prematurely. When the cushions begin to sag, it’s common to believe that the entire sofa needs replacing. This is not only more expensive (and wasteful), it’s also more difficult to do and a more expensive process.

So, before you decide the fate of your sofa, be sure to pay close attention to your current sofa cushions. Many people often find that the frame and fabric are still in good condition. With a little help from Foam Direct, you can have your old sofa feeling as good as new. Perhaps better than ever before!

Replacement Sofa Cushions FAQs

If you have questions about replacing the cushions on your sofa, we’ve put together a collection of answers to some of our customers most frequently asked questions. If you can’t see the answer that you’re looking for below, please feel free to contact us.

How Can I Replace My Sofa Cushions?

With Foam Direct, it’s easy to order replacement cushions for your sofa. We can cut foam cushions to the size and shape you need to upgrade your furniture. You can place your order online and we even offer a next working day delivery service. Providing you can easily remove your old cushions from the covers, you can easily swap them with the new cut to size cushion foam we provide you with.

What Foam is Best for Sofa Cushions?

When recommending a suitable type of foam for sofa cushions, we use thickness as a cushion indicator. For example, thinner cushions will generally require a firmer foam in order to offer enough support. Meanwhile, thicker cushions can usually benefit from a softer foam (with a medium feel). Cushions 1 – 4 inches thick could be made using a firm, whereas cushions over 4 inches could be made with a medium feel foam. Soft feel foams are generally not suitable for seat cushions but can be used for replacing sofa back cushions. Of course, when it comes to comfort, you should also factor your personal preferences into your decision.

Which is Better Fibre or Foam?

Many of our customers come to us looking to replace the fibre in the cushions with foam. Although usually cheaper than foam, fibre filling does not have a very long lifespan. Over time it will begin to make your cushions sag and offer very little support. For these reasons, we believe that foam is better than fibre.

How Thick Should Sofa Cushions Be?

The thickness of your sofa cushions will vary depending on your type of sofa and the shape of your covers. For example, the thickness of some cushions exceeds the boundary of the cover piping, whereas some sit below it. Whilst your old cushion filling can give you some indicator of the shape of your cushion, it is best not to use this as an exact guide as cushions can deform and compress over time. If you would like to know more about measuring new sofa cushions, please refer to our dedicated guide.
